Hey Jazz Fans! Jesse 'Chuy' Varela, here. Currently I'm serving Jazz 91 as Co-Program Director along with Chris Cortez, and we want to inform you about some upcoming programming changes at KCSM Jazz 91 that we hope you dig!

morning cup of jazz: jayn and keith

As many of you have heard Jayn Pettingill and Keith Hines are our new co-hosts of A Morning Cup of Jazz. Beginning on Monday, November 29th from 6am-10am you will hear Jayn Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Keith on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Much love to these two for their excellent programming. We wish them the very best!

Thursday Program Changes

With the Morning Cup of Jazz program changes, Leslie Stovall will now host the Thursday edition of Jazz In The Afternoon (2pm-6pm) and Greg Bridges will host the Thursday Jazz Oasis (6pm-9pm) and our new program Beyond The Oasis (9pm-12am). These schedule changes begin Dec.2. Much love to these two icons of Bay Area Jazz radio!

SUNDAY PROGRAM CHANGES

We have reconfigured our Sunday programming schedule as well. For the Sunday morning timeslots we have grouped together four of our most in-depth programs examining Jazz music. The shows span all the eras with unique and insightful historical perspectives.

  • 6AM: Clint Baker digs into the legacy of Count Basie and Swing music with his Breakfast, Dance, & BBQ show.
  • 7AM: Carl Sonny Leyland adds to it with The Rhythm Retrospective and his fun insightful look into Boogie Woogie and Blues.
  • 8AM: The dean of Jazz radio historians, Richard Hadlock, moves to a new time with The Annals of Jazz.
  • 9AM: Chris Cortez presents a variety of interviews from the Jazz Archives of Jazz 91 on I'm Talking Jazz.
  • 10AM: The illustrious broadcaster, Clifford Brown Jr., returns to the Mid-Day Jazz team with a two-hour broadcast followed by his popular American Jazz Countdown, a survey of current Jazz releases spinning nationally and internationally.
  • 6PM: NEW SHOW! Desde La Bahia (From The Bay) Hosted by Maria Marquez. Joining the Jazz 91 team is the internationally acclaimed vocalist and radio broadcaster, Maria Marquez. Who is Maria? She was born in Caracas, Venezuela and is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music. She started producing Jazz radio in Venezuela where she hosted radio shows and worked as the program manager for the first jazz radio station in Caracas. Locally, she has produced music shows for KRCB (Rohnert Park) and KWMR (Point Reyes).

I want to give listeners a fun, varied, and a mood setting experience when listening to my program, which includes all styles of music, writes Maria. Radio and especially music shows have always been a fascination of mine. I am excited to bring Desde La Bahia, which means From the Bay, to KCSM. The program celebrates and showcases music from all over the world. The power of music has always been a fascination of mine and I continue to be enriched by it. Please join me for a fun, varied, and mood setting experience every Sunday night at 6PM following Jesse Chuy Varela's Latin Jazz show.

A great array of program filled with jazz education and entertainment!
