  • Champian Fulton (2019)

    Visit Website

Pianist-vocalist Champian Fulton hails from Norman, OK. Having started on piano at age five, she later tried drums. She also experimented with trumpet, emulating her jazz-playing father, Stephen. Frequent visitors to chez Fulton included his friends Clark Terry and Major Holley, and when Stephen was hired to run the Clark Terry Institute for Jazz Studies, the family moved to Iowa.

A notable performance of Champian's came when she was barely 10 years old, at Clark Terry's 75th birthday party. Clark took notice of what an excellent singer and pianist she was becoming.

Champian attended college at SUNY Purchase, studying with Jon Faddis. A decade or so ago, she was recognized as a Rising Jazz Star by the Down Beat Magazine Critic’s Poll. More recently, she was voted "Female Jazz Vocalist of the Year" at the 2017 Hot House Jazz Magazine Fans' Decision Award Ceremony.

As a leader, Champian has recorded prolifically, and her album count is now in double figures.
