Andy Stein just might have one of those cards carried by the old-timers in New Orleans: "Music for All Occasions." He's a multi-reed player, and a classical and swinging jazz violinist.

Andy is probably best known as a member of The Guys All-Star Shoe Band on "A Prairie Home Companion" before its name change to "Live from Here" with Chris Thile. But he was a founding member of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, which put out some fun and original-sounding recordings in the early 1970s.

Andy has been on countless film scores and movie soundtracks, and his violin is the one you hear on Ken Burns's "The West" and "The War".

Andy has done his share of superb classical and chamber music arrangements, and pop music sessions. In fact, he's a great admirer of popular arrangers and composers from the 1920s and '30s, such as Duke Ellington.
