Remembering Those We Lost in 2022…

Jayn Pettingill | December 30th, 2022

We lost some Jazz greats in 2022, across the wide and varied spectrum of the genre. Their unique voices, whether as a horn player, vocalist, writer, educator or producer, are missed. KCSM will continue to honor and celebrate their work into the New Year and beyond.

Our San Francisco Bay Area Jazz community lost significant members this year. We begin with their names (please note this is not a complete list, please share in comments others that you wish added).

As we reflect upon the creators and presenters of this wonderful music, I want to express my appreciation for the inclusion of Eric Jackson on this list. From his time at WBCN (when it was a “progressive” station, prior to adopting a rock format), through over 40 years as the Dean of Jazz Radio in Boston, Mr. Jackson had been part of the fabric of music lovers’ lives for half a century. He played the music of the immortal, great innovators of jazz, and emphasized the newer musicians as well. With the availability of streaming, he was heard worldwide, and by those of us who had moved away from Boston. Perusing his playlists, one would find that most of the music he included on his programs had been released within the past year or two. As does the fantastic crew at KCSM, Eric Jackson opened up the world of jazz music to so many listeners.
