FAQ

Can I use any music I want?

Any music you use must be original or listed under ASCAP
( www.ascap.com) or BMI (www.bmi.com). PLEASE fill out the mandatory music information sheet.

Can I submit more than one entry?

Yes! Submit as many movies as you like!

Can I submit something that has been submitted in another festival?

Yes, the only exceptions are the previous SPOTLIGHT! Festivals. Just be sure to follow the Spotlight Festival guidelines.

Does the production have to be produced for a class or can it be created outside of class?

Your movie may be a class assignment or it may be a personal, or a team project.

Does it matter if I shoot my movie in 16:9 or 4:3?

You may shoot your movie in either format. However, the 16:9 format is preferred as KCSM’s programming & productions are in that format.

Can I use actors and actresses who are not in high school in my movie?

Yes. Your entry must be produced by currently-enrolled Bay Area high school students, but you can use non-high school actors and actresses.

Do I need to obtain release forms for everyone who appears on camera?

You should always have written permission from on-camera participants!

Who will be judging the festival and how will my production be judged?

The festival judges will be industry professionals, film-makers and college faculty. Your film will be viewed by the judging panel and evaluated on all aspects of production skills, story telling, directing, etc.

How long can a film be?

The maximum allowable running time of a film is 5 minutes.
