| Mark Feldman (2009) | |
|---|---|
| Mark Feldman has lived a double life since his graduation from medical school in Lausanne, Switzerland. By day, he’s a gastro-enterologist with a practice in Kingston, NY. But by night you’ll find him in the jazz clubs, and half a dozen times a year you’ll find him in this or that prestige recording studio pursuing his avocation as a jazz record producer.
He got his start in the latter business in the early 1980s when he began Uptown Records with an old colleague (similarly afflicted, it appears, with this double life). Towards the end of that decade, he began Reservoir Music, which over the past 20 years has released a slow but steady series of recordings—the count now at about the century mark—by musicians whose only common connection, apart from their quality, is the fact that Mark likes them personally and their work professionally. It’s easy to see that Mark is a fan of the baritone saxophone (Reservoir has recordings by Pepper Adams, Nick Brignola and Gary Smulyan), and that he is a particular fan of the jazz piano from Reservoir’s “New York Piano Series”, which features the likes of Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, John Hicks, Steve Kuhn, Jay McShann, Jon Mayer, Hod O'Brien and Rob Schneiderman. |
