| For the daughter of one-time Paul Whiteman guitarist and arranger Art Ryerson, a career in music was perhaps inevitable, even if her ultimate choice of flute followed an earlier practical period on piano and a theoretical plan to play trumpet.
Since hitting the road as a full-time professional for five years at age 20, Ali has played with musicians as diverse as Dr. Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Stephane Grappelli, Red Rodney, Laurindo Almeida, Art Farmer, Maxine Sullivan, Roy Haynes, Julius Baker, and (as principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Symphony) with Luciano Pavarotti. She's recently teamed up with fellow flutists Frank Wess and Holly Hofmann as "Flutology". For several years she has been named in the Downbeat Magazine Jazz Poll. Ali has performed all over North America (including Carnegie Hall and the Monterey Jazz Festival) and Europe, and in Japan and Africa. She also teaches, internationally and at home at locations such as Ohio State University and the University of Alaska. Hidden Valley Music Seminars in California presents her annual week-long jazz flute master class the first week in July. |
