Cheryl Bentyne (2014)

Cheryl Bentyne was born into a musical family in Mount Vernon, WA, and began singing as a teenager with her father's Dixieland and Swing band. (Is there a better grounding?)

After studying music and theater, she moved to nearby Seattle, and joined the New Deal Rhythm Band. Four years later she set her sights on Los Angeles, finding a manager, and going to work day jobs while doing gigs at night, waiting for her big break.

That big break came when Laurel Massé of the Manhattan Transfer was forced to leave the group in order to recuperate from a severe automobile accident. Cheryl's audition was successful, and now, after 35 years performing to adoring audiences worldwide, they have no fewer than ten Grammys, and go from strength to strength.
