    Gerald Beckett (2017)

Flautist Gerald Beckett was born in Beaumont, Texas. He began on alto sax as a pre-teen, but while studying at the University of North Texas in Denton, switched to flute. (We all know of Texas Tenors, but Texas Flautists? Yes: Gerald joined the likes of NEA Jazz Master Hubert Laws from Houston, one of Gerald's musical heroes.)

Gerald went on to graduate with a BBA in Administrative Management.

It wasn't until Gerald moved to the Bay Area in the mid-80s that he started immersing himself in the jazz scene. He started listening to the great jazz flute players, such as Herbie Mann, Eric Dolphy, Dave Valentin, Paul Horn, and the aforementioned Hubert Laws. He spent eight years studying flute at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, giving recitals in the classica repertoire.

Gerald has played with just about everybody in every kind of setting, and has half a dozen releases under his own name, the latest of which, "Oblivion", might well be his best.
