The New York Times has called Steven Lugerner “an impeccably trained multi-reedist, with an emphasis on ‘multi’—he plays clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, English horn and flutes, along with saxophones…” And of his compositions, Francis Davis of "The Village Voice" described them as “a textured, nearly seamless blend of composition and improvisation”.

Born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area in a multi-cultural and enthusiastically artistic family, Steven he went to New York City in 2006 to attend The New School, graduating in 2010. For several years, he was resident on both coasts, but has now, as Douglass Cross wrote, "come home to … San Francisco."

Steven is a member of the experimental-pop group In One Wind, the jazz-trio-collective CHIVES, and the post-core quartet killerBOB. Among his own groups, most bearing his own name, he also leads the anonymous-sounding and punningly named SLUGgish Ensemble.
