Singer-songwriter Meklit came to the Bay Area from Ethiopia (where she was born), via Brooklyn (where she attended elementary school), Yale University (where she got her BA in Political Science), and a couple of other stops, too. Resident in San Francisco for ten years now, perhaps she's stopped moving?

Since that arrival in San Francisco a decade ago, Meklit has emphatically not stopped moving, having been immersed in music, arts, social justice, and community engagement. She was named a TED Global Fellow in 2009, and a TED Senior Fellow in 2012. She has served as an artist-in-residence at New York University, the De Young Museum, and the Red Poppy Art House. And if that's not enough, she is a founding members of the Arba Minch Collective, a group of Ethiopian artists in diaspora devoted to nurturing ties with their homeland and with contemporary artists there. What's more, she co-founded the Nile Project, which unites musicians from the countries of the Nile Basin. Her music is imbued with poetry, and draws from jazz folk hip-hop and art-rock traditions

Meklit's second full-length recording "We Are Live" came out in March. Once you hear her stunningly original voice, it will stay with you. Perhaps "The Village Voice" said it best: "She's a blithe-voiced daughter of Joni, who considers music a path to higher ground, with rest-stops for the likes of the Talking Heads and Lou Reed."
