Native Californian Eric Whittington lives a true San Francisco life.

Using his film degree from UC Berkeley, Eric spent a couple of relatively conventional decades in film exhibition, music promotion, screenwriting, film production, and even running a small record label. Then, in 1999, he opened Bird and Beckett Books and Records, a small bookstore and performance space in San Francisco's Glen Park area.

He sets up for (typically but often more) three jazz shows per week, shifting the heavy wheeled shelves to the sides and moving the chairs out from under the tiny stage beforehand, and cleaning up afterwards. (Ever modest, he claims to have legions of helpers, but the reality may be that he's more like The Wizard of Oz. Who can say?)

Like many of the smaller venues that present jazz, it's hardly a venture capitalist's money-making dream: rather, it's all about the music.
