It's a fair bet that anyone during the 1980s either listening to the radio or buying records to chill out by has some of George Winston's music in their library.

Though born in Michigan, George grew up mainly in Montana, Mississippi and Florida. During the 1960s, he studied sociology at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.

George loved the instrumental R&B, rock and pop music of his generation, and was particularly drawn to the organ. But in I971, after hearing Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, and later Earl Hines, he went in a different direction, solo piano.

George's earliest recordings were for John Fahey's Takoma Records, but in 1979 Will Ackerman convinced him to record for his then newly founded Windham Hill. George played some guitar music and some "night-time" music on piano, which were the basis for "Autumn", which became a best-selling recording for Windham Hill, and solidified the label's sound.

George went on to record more seasonal pieces, a Vince Guaraldi recording, "Night Divides the Day: The Music of The Doors", and many others. He's also a producer of recordings—by not only Hawaiian slack key wizards, but also American traditional musicians.
