  • Kev Choice (2017)

Oakland native, emcee, producer and bandleader Kev Choice first emerged as part of Lauryn Hill's band.

Kev has said that he was heavily into vinyl as a kid, and that developed an ear for all kinds of music. As a teenager, he played in classical and jazz programs as part of UC Berkeley young musicians' program. He continued his studies, first at Xavier University in New Orleans, and then at Southern Illinois University, where he got his master's in music.

After grad school, Kev started touring and recording with Michael Franti and Spearhead, Lyrics Born, Too $hort, Ledisi. and Goapele. It was in 2007 that Lauryn Hill asked him to be her musical director, and that took him around the world, exposing him to Ethiopian and world music, rock and reggae.

Since then Kev has opened for the likes of Robert Glasper, Mos Def, Digable Planets—the list is too long. He has composed hip-hop sonatas, and while he has yet to compose a hip-hop symphony, that's in effect what it is every time he gets on stage.
