Multi-instrumentalist and string expert Matthew Montfort is the leader of the long-lived world-fusion music ensemble Ancient Future. Since 1978, the band has blended centuries-old musical traditions with jazz, rock and reggae—blending Indian, African, Asian, Middle Eastern and South American styles for a long while before before the marketers labeled it.

Matthew holds a B.A. in World Music and Composition, and a Master's degree in Arts and Media Technology from Antioch University. He's studied with master musicians across just about every musical tradition, and is a pioneer of the scalloped fretboard guitar, which allows the bending of notes, as you might hear in South Indian vina, or with steel guitar.

Matthew has written a book, "Ancient Traditions—Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali, and India", and is a valued teacher here in the Bay Area and beyond.
