|Clarinetist-composer Ben Goldberg was born in Denver, Colorado, and got his undergraduate music degree from UC Santa Cruz, followed by a master's in music composition from Mills College.
Ben studied with the dean of 20th Century clarinet teachers, Rosario Mazzeo, and later with Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano. He became interested in klezmer music while in college, and started thinking about the intersection of the klezmer tradition, improvised music, and the clarinet in jazz. After playing and touring with The Klezmorim, he put together his own New Klezmer Trio, with Dan Seamans and Kenny Wolleson .
For many years, Ben has been an integral part of the Bay Area tribe of creative music, always searching for like-minded spirits with whom to collaborate: Bill Frisell, Carla Kilhstedt and Tin Hat, John Zorn, Charlie Hunter, Vijay Iyer, Myra Melford, Nels Cline. They all seem to speak his poetic musical language.
Ben's two latest recordings were favorably reviewed in the "New York Times", and just the day before his being cast away on KCSM's desert island he was reviewed equally favorably by jazz critic Kevin Whitehead on NPR's "Fresh Air".
