|Stephanie Nakasian (2013)|
|Born in Washington, DC, singer and teacher Stephanie Nakasian grew up in Bronxville, NY, where as a child she studied both classical piano and violin (even taking classes at Julliard), sang in choirs, and studied voice.
She attended Northwestern University, majoring in economics and ending up with an MBA. Following graduation, work as a financial consultant with major banks in New York and Chicago was only natural, but in 1981 something else clicked from way back: that singing thing.
She first came to international attention while touring with Jon Hendricks and company. You may recognize her voice from the Riverwalk radio shows, of which she has done several. She now has a dozen recordings under her own name: the "Billie Remembered" album was featured on "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross.
She's an exceptional teacher, too, moving through the colleges in Virginia, where she lives, doing workshops and leading vocal ensembles.
She married her accompanist, the great jazz pianist Hod O'Brien. They have a daughter, Veronica, who herself is a singer.
