|Peter Williams (2012)|
|Native Californian Peter Williams can't remember a time when music--not just jazz, but many types--wasn't a big part of his life. It began with his family: he describes his father as "big in country music--he was a deejay, songwriter, record producer and promoted events." Peter got into jazz while in high school after hearing George Benson on his car radio.
Peter began in radio while at UC Santa Cruz, volunteering at the campus station. He later worked at KCSM, and also at the legendary KJAZ. Then he landed the job of program director at KAZU in Pacific Grove ("a small public station, very eclectic"). He acquired extra responsibilities, such as becoming music director, too, until he was general manager. After some time, he realized that he had worked himself up to a position where he no longer had anything to do with actual music. And so followed a period at the Tucson Jazz Society.
Peter returned to the Bay Area as artistic director of Yoshi's, which had just moved from Claremont Avenue in Oakland to new premises in Jack London Square. He booked acts there, and, for a while after the San Francisco location opened in 2007, was the booker for both clubs!
Peter now has his "dream job" as the new executive director of the Napa Valley Opera House.
