| John Calloway (2011) | |
|---|---|
| John Calloway is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and educator with a penchant for Afro-Cuban, Afro-Latin and Latin Jazz music.
Born and raised in San Francisco, John left to study in New York City; but for nearly 30 years he been home, and an integral part of the Bay Area's Jazz scene, working with Cachao, Max Roach, Omar Sosa, John Santos, Manny Oquendo & Libre, and the like. John's concept of writing and arranging folkloric music as the feature rather than in a supporting role is part of the new movement over the past few years of pushing Afro-Cuban Jazz more into the World Music movement. John currently teaches at San Francisco State (that's when he's not teaching at elementary schools, too), and is an extra-ordinary flute player. John frequently travels to Cuba, jamming with the best, such as Jose-Luis Cortez and Orlando Valle. Via PlazaCUBA, where he's the music director, he also helps other musicians who want to get to Cuba to study. |
