| Scott Sorkin (2008) | |
|---|---|
| Bay Area native Scott Sorkin grew up in Millbrae and Bolinas, and received a degree in Jazz Performance from San Jose State University, where he studied with fellow guitarists Bruce Forman, Steve Erquiaga, and Tuck Andress. After graduation, he spent four years with the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra of San Francisco.
Following a period as composer, producer and guitarist in the band Burning Bridges (alongside now Bay Area fixtures Jason Lewis, John Shifflett and Kristen Strom), Scott “went corporate”, working successively as a programmer and house composer for White Shark Interactive in Santa Cruz, as Webmaster for high tech startup eVoice in Menlo Park, and as a freelance producer, composer and guitarist. It was probably this last that opened the path, as it were, to joining Open Path Music in San Jose as a producer/engineer/composer working on projects too numerous to list—although mention must be made of his multiple roles as composer/producer/engineer/guitarist on the score for the feature film “Fat Rose & Squeaky” (with Louise Fletcher & Cicely Tyson). Before and during this period, Scott shared the stage with the likes of Steve and Michael Turré, Mike Vax, Wesla Whitfield, Louie Bellson and his old San Jose State teacher Bruce Forman, as well as performing in groups large (the Count Basie Orchestra, Dave Eschelman’s Jazz Garden Big Band and the Full Faith & Credit Big Band) and small (the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra). Currently Scott performs and writes regularly in three bands: Crossing Borders, Ed Johnson & Novo Tempo, and Kristen Strom. |
