One minute New Jersey-born Hal Stein is a 15-year-old in 1944 appearing on stage at New York City's Town Hall alongside his idol, Don Byas; the next he's an elder statesman of jazz in 2007 teaching at Stanford University and appearing all over the San Francisco Bay Area. What happened in between?

What happened in between was that he appeared in the big bands of Benny Carter, Gene Krupa, Claude Thornhill, Artie Shaw, Georgie Auld, Hampton Hawes, Toshiko Akioshi, and Joe Henderson, and the small groups of Henry "Red" Allen, Trummy Young, Teddy Wilson, Tony Scott, J.C. Heard, Charlie Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Roy Haynes, Gerry Mulligan, Elvin Jones, Teddy Charles, Kenny Drew, Bill Evans, Joe Farrell, and Chick Corea, and was also one of the "Four Altos" on the 1957 Prestige recording with Phil Woods, Gene Quill and Sahib Shihab.
