| Carl Sonny Leyland (2007) | |
|---|---|
| One of the most adept current performers of those most American of musics, blues and boogie woogie piano, Carl Sonny Leyland (that's his real name) was born in the south of England.
Resident in the US for some 20 years, he started in New Orleans (where else?), and gradually worked his way west to California. He has appeared at festivals from the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee to the West Coast Ragtime Festival, and from the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival to the Rocky Mountain Ragtime Festival. Musicians with whom he has performed are a diverse bunch, including Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Big Sandy & his Fly Rite Boys, Deke Dickerson, Gremoli, George Probert, Dan Barrett, Lowell Fulsom, Jerry McCain, Billy Lee Riley, Janis Martin, Johnnie Johnson, and--last but far from least--Champion Jack Dupree. |
