Otis Redding with Chuy and Mel Fri 11 May 2-6pm

Ron Lee | May 5th, 2018

We all remember Otis Redding singing his hit “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” back in the late 60s. Otis got his start as part of the southern chitlin’ circuit in the 60s. He was later signed to Stax Records and was a talent scout as well as a performer. A major turning point in his career came as he closed the Sat night performance of the Monterey Pop Festival. This performance introduced him to more main stream white audiences. He composed his hit “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” in Sausalito a short time later and recorded it just before his untimely death in a plane crash.

Chuy and Mel will be telling the story of Otis Redding on Fri 11 May from 2pm – 6pm. Listen in to hear the legacy of this great soul singer.

Your show for the pledge drive honoring Otis Redding brought me to tears while driving in my car. My mom, also a DJ, just moved to Memphis and is volunteering at the Stax Museum not far from her new home. All of this led me to pledge $200 in support of our friend and fellow record collector, Chuy Varella, KCSM, and the memory of my hero Otis Redding!!

Thank you KCSM, you provide the soundtrack of our daily lives.

Thank you so much! We love hearing from listeners and how they “hear” the music played on KCSM. We all have a special connection to the music and your comment here underscores that fact–thank you for sharing your moment with the Otis Redding special and for your pledge.
