As a guest of San Jose Jazz I attended the Kim Nalley performance tonight. Kim performed with her trio Tammy Hall on piano, Michael Zisman on base and Ken Bryson on drums. Recently she sang with the Mads Tolling quartet and Mads appeared tonight as a special surprise guest. This set the tone for the night as there was a lot of interplay between the two musicians. Kim is one powerful singer. She ran through a set of standards like When the Saints Come Marching In, Dancing Cheek to Cheek, Teach Me Tonight, Someone to Watch Over Me, and more. It was great. Mads would take solos and on Dancing Cheek to Cheek they did a real nice call and response duet. She then turned off the amps and did a full acoustic version of Summertime with Tammy Hall on piano. It was great. She finished off with Chain Gang and All of Me. She sung her way out with All of Me. If Kim is in a club or concert near you check her out.
