Cedar Walton first got noticed when he was playing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger. At that time Freddie Hubbard just joined and Wayne Shorter was playing saxaphone in the group. During his stint with Art Blakey he composed several jazz standards like Mosaic, Mode for Joe and Ugetsu. After the Jazz Messengers he joined Prestige records and accompanied artists like Sonny Chris, Pat Martino, Charles McPherson and Abbey Lincoln. In January 2010 Cedar was recognized as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Listen in to hear Cedar’s music on KCSM.
