San Jose Jazz Summer Fest Aug 9-11: Fest Five picks for Ron

Ron Lee | July 25th, 2013

Get ready for San Jose Jazz Summer Fest! San Jose Jazz will be presenting their Summer Fest in downtown San Jose Fri night and all day Sat and Sun. They have a great line up and many of the artists have been featured here on the KCSM blog. San Jose Jazz asked me to pick my five favorite artists and here they are:

Grace Kelly

I have been follow Grace since she first appeared on Marion McPartland’s Piano Jazz show. She was last out this way in Mar of 2012 for San Jose Jazz Winter Fest.  I caught that concert and it was great. Grace plays a mix of original pieces and standards. She can do straight ahead jazz and then get funky. I remember her finale at Winter Fest was a real funky version of Summertime. It was fantastic. Listen to her do her original composition Filosophical Flying Fish .

Pink Martini

Pink Martini is just a lot of fun to listen to. They play music from all over the world. I think I first heard them on PBS. I remember listening to their 2010 Christmas album with songs from all over the world. I see they have a new album coming out in September. Do check them out doing Hang On Little Tomato.

Javon Jackson w/ Les McCann and Dr. Lonnie Smith

Javon Jackson is cool. He has been touring with Les McCann and Dr Lonnie Smith. I heard him a couple of years back at Monterey Jazz Festival. Les McCann is getting on in years but once he got warmed up he cooked. Les is best know for his recording of Compared to What with Eddie Harris in 1969. Yeah these guys cook so listen to them do Compared to What.

Stacey Kent

Stacey Kent is a new artist who I have not heard live before. I usually hear her on the French jazz stations TSF(www.tsf.com). I also hear her on KCSM. Stacy’s music is the kind you imagine playing in Paris at some cafe. Very beautiful and romantic.
Les Eaux du Mars

Cameo

Cameo is not quite jazz but they are the Fri night party band at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. They should be lots of fun and good for dancing. They have had lots of club hits like Word Up, Sparkle and Candy. I love that funk!
Cameo doing Candy. Time to party!

Looking forward to San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Details are at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest.
